Temple University is stepping up to make college more accessible for low-income students in Philadelphia with its Temple Future Scholars Program. This new initiative is designed to mentor and prepare 120 seventh-grade students from public schools for higher education. Over time, the program will expand to support up to 1,200 students, offering them resources and guidance throughout their middle and high school years.
Building a Strong Foundation for Student Success
The program is a partnership between Temple University, the School District of Philadelphia, and Heights Philadelphia, a nonprofit dedicated to improving educational and career opportunities. Each year, an additional 200 seventh graders will be enrolled, ensuring ongoing support through high school graduation.
How the Program Works
Temple Future Scholars provides students with:
- Saturday Sessions: Monthly academic and personal development sessions held at Temple’s main campus.
- Summer Program: A four-week summer program focusing on college readiness, leadership, and skill-building.
- Mentorship: Current Temple students, especially those from similar backgrounds, will mentor middle schoolers to provide encouragement and guidance.
Meet the First Scholars
The program has already selected its first group of students, who will be introduced at a kickoff event at Temple’s Performing Arts Center. At the event, students will wear T-shirts displaying their anticipated college graduation year. The first Saturday Academy session starts in March.
The participating schools include:
- Mary McLeod Bethune School
- Morton McMichael School
- Paul L. Dunbar School
- Russell H. Conwell School
- Tanner G. Duckery School
- John F. Hartranft School
- Juniata Park Academy
A Direct Pathway to College
Students who successfully complete the program and meet the qualifications will be eligible for Temple Promise, a scholarship initiative launched in early 2024. Temple Promise covers remaining tuition and fees for students from families earning $65,000 or less, after other financial aid is applied. Nearly 500 Temple students benefited from this scholarship in its first year.
Guiding Students Every Step of the Way
The program is structured to focus on different areas of student development each year:
- 7th Grade: Developing a scholar identity
- 8th Grade: Preparing for high school
- 9th Grade: Building self-confidence and empowerment
- 10th Grade: Encouraging social and civic engagement
- 11th Grade: Exploring research and discovery
- 12th Grade: Getting ready for college
A Commitment to Education and Community
Temple University President John Fry emphasized the program’s importance, stating:
“This is the type of program that can dramatically raise the educational aspirations of students and their families, leading to positive outcomes for all involved.”
Temple University is dedicated to breaking down barriers to higher education. By investing in local students through the Temple Future Scholars Program, the university is giving them the tools they need to succeed in college and beyond.
